There is a new site offering a free bonus at Celeb Poker. The bonus is an up front $9 in free cash with a further pending bonus of up to $190, which makes this potentially the largest free poker bankroll available online at this time. The original offer was for $19 up front, but that was changed at the beginning of March, 2010. This bonus deal is available from CelebPokerMoney. There are a lot of countries that are restricted from claiming this bonus. You can see the full list on the CelebPokerMoney site. As usual, American players can not avail of this offer.

Titan Poker Players Compete in Irish Open
Posted by Bradley, April 11, 2012 Titan Poker sent a delegation of nine online qualifiers to compete in the Irish Open 2012 Main Event, staged last weekend at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin, Ireland. Although the team members did not cash in the Main Event, two of them finished in the money in the side events. ** Dan Murariu from Romania was 16th in the 500 6-handed Hold’em for 950. ** Stefan Kolossow from Germany was 2nd in the same event for 13,200. A total of 502 players paid the 3,200 entry to the Irish Open 2012 Main Event, creating a prizepool of 1,606,400 and a first place prize of 420,000. When the tournament ended, it was Kevin Vandersmissen from Belgium who emerged victorious, after he came from being the final tables short stack to beat chip leader Thomas Beer from Germany in heads-up battle. Beer had to settle for the second place prize of 225,000. On Day 1 of the tournament, Titan Pokers Dutch player, Robin van den Heuvel, winner of the recently staged iPOPS Live Main Event in Prague, knocked out Team Titans Marvin Rettenmaier. Van den Heuvel and compatriot Leon Piso were the only two Titan Poker qualifiers to advance to Day 2 of the tournament. Pictured below is Leon Piso at the featured table:

Strategy with Kristy: Reid Young Discusses Showdown Value
March 22 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: Tax Time Strategy with Kristy: Quinn Sivage Discusses Min-Raising Button Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part Two Share It Tags Cash Poker, Online Poker, Poker Players, Poker Strategy, PokerNews Podcast, PokerNews Strategy Print Reid Young is professional poker poker player who, prior to Black Friday, made his living playing online cash-games. In late 2010, he authored, The Blue Book: An Advanced Strategy Guide for No-Limit Hold’em Cash Games, which first sold for $2,500. Young is also a very sought out poker coach and has plans to launch an innovative coaching website. For this edition of the Strategy with Kristy Podcast, he discusses various topics, but really delves into advanced strategy concerning showdown value by illustrating it with a couple of hand histories. Here is a snippet from the interview: This straightforward guy raises in the cutoff. We are 100 big binds, effective, so we both have $200 at $1/$2. I reraise from the big blind with ace-nine suited just because its slightly below my calling requirements. Im not really comfortable calling. I think I can take it down preflop often, combined with continuation betting a decent amount and outplay him postflop, plus the equity of my actual hand versus his calling range gives me several ways I can win money here. I think they all add up to make me a small profit on the play. He called, and wed gone back and forth a little bit before this. I was kind of surprised to see him call. I more expected him to four-bet or fold, which is also why I decided to three-bet a hand like ace-nine. Im not as dominated by his calling range, and if he four-bets, I can just get away. It makes it easier to play and less likely that hes going to have an ace-X hand that he can combat my light three-bet with. The flop comes three-four-five, all different suits. This is a pretty good flop for me and one that puts him in an awkward position with a lot of hands like middle pairs. Also, hed call a bet on the flop with a lot of better ace-highs that I think I can get him to fold by the river. Its a good board for me being the aggressor and not one that he wants to get in a lot hands with. Even if he has a hand like pocket nines, in his best-case scenario, I have ace-king, and hes only a little better than a two-to-one favorite. Its not that amazing for him to raise pocket nines, so I have the green light to continuation bet here, looking to fold out queen-jack suited and hands like that. So, I do c-bet, and he ends up calling. When he calls, combined with the fact that I said that we have a fairly pre-established dynamic preflop, its extremely evident to me that he either has a similar hand to mine like ace-jack or ace-queen, or he has one of those medium pairs like nines, eights, or sevens. I think sixes might be a little too light to peel on this flop, but who knows, he could have those for sure. The turn is a two, which gives me the wheel. Its one of those spots where I have so many ace-highs in my range. Sure, I could have continuation bet the flop with king-queen or complete air like seven-eight, and then continued betting on the turn to try and represent an ace, but Ive found that more straightforward players that play their hands based on equity, just arent going to be calling down with pocket nines here. They are just worried about so much of my range, and they will worry about me betting the river. Its not like they just have to call the turn and the hand is over. I can still over-bet shove the river. I can have sixes in my range as well so its not that amazing of a situation for him if he has an ace, let alone a hand like pocket nines. It would be a really tough call down for him. Thats why I decided to check. Listen to the podcast to hear more of Young’s analysis on this hand.

Bodog Poker to Move into Asian Market
Bodog Poker has recently announced via a press release that the company has plans to forge ahead and move into the Asian markets. Online poker and other online casino games have recently become more and more popular in the Asian market. Last year, the Bodog Network was launched. Since the launch of the Bodog Network, the company has been operating using a new style and it is believed that this could change the way that the poker market operates. The change has come in the form of the Recreational Poker Model, which attracts different players to the poker tables. This move has affected the wider online poker community, with many online poker sites changing how they structure the rakeback. Microgaming has made some changes, offering its players more chances to play anonymously, and has added more anonymous Heads Up poker tables. Poker Stars has recently introduced Zoom Poker, which is a poker game that is more friendly to the casual online poker player. The more casual player-friendly model that has been adopted by the Bodog Poker Network will be used as the company eases its way into the Asian market, with the company entering the market as Bodog88. Adding Bodog88 to the Network will not only give us increased liquidity but also a chance to market our product to a new audience who havent been clouded by those looking to protect the existing status quo of the few taking from the many, said the Vice President of the Bodog Poker Network, Jonas Odman. Bodog88s Managing Director, Robert Gustafsson, had the following to say: Poker is still in its infancy in Asia but the Bodog product is totally in line with how Asian players think: Trust is vital. This is why they only use Live Dealer casinos over the more common RNG casino in Europe. I can see anonymous tables making a similar impact over here.

PokerStars is Now Licensed in Malta
PokerStars has been granted an online gaming license in the Malta online gambling jurisdiction. The online poker site has now been licensed in seven online gambling jurisdictions, including Malta, the Isle of Man, Italy, Belgium, France, Estonia, and Denmark. PokerStars hopes to be granted an online gambling license in Spain too. Obtaining an online gaming license is an arduous task. It requires significant resources and a willingness to allow detailed scrutiny of company practices and procedures that examine an applicants credentials in important areas like integrity, security and attitudes to responsible gaming, said Eric Hollreiser, the Head of Corporate Communications at PokerStars. He further commented that the online poker company is happy to be put through this scrutiny in order to be granted online poker licenses in the various online gambling jurisdictions in which they wish to offer their well established and popular online poker site. Hollreiser spoke about the benefits to players and the uniqueness of being licensed in so many online gambling jurisdictions, saying: Were happy to submit to this, though, when theres a clear benefit to players, the industry or our company. In particular, as far as our players are concerned, we believe that each new license we obtain underscores the reasons why they should feel comfortable playing with us. We dont know of any company in our industry that has been licensed by as many jurisdictions as PokerStars. The most recent of these online gaming licenses was granted to PokerStars by the Belgian Gaming Commission. The announcement followed soon after the Belgian government declared that they had plans to block any unlicensed online gambling operators in their country. We are delighted that with the great efforts and cooperation of the Gaming Board we have been able to become fully regulated in the Belgium market, said Jean Christophe Choffray. Choffray is the Head of Online Gaming at the parent company of PokerStars, Circus Groupe.

Interview with Vanessa Rousso
by Steve Marzolf As a lawyer, poker pro and self-described “huge dork,” Vanessa Rousso has made a name for herself in tournament poker, earning more than $3.7 million since 2006. Lately, she’s been repping for PokerStars and running poker “boot camps” to raise up the next crop of winning players. We called Vanessa up to talk about her tactics for surviving – and thriving – in the high-pressure world of large-buy-in tournaments. So you’re primarily a tournament player? I would say I’m only a tournament player. I can play a cash game or two. But to be honest with you, I play so many tournaments as it is, that if I play cash games too, it’s just too much poker. I like to have balance in my life, and there just aren’t enough hours in the day to play tournaments, cash games and do all the other things I like to do. Mike Matusow was complaining to us that high-buy-in tourneys have gotten too risky to profit on – what do you think of that statement? My results are skewed toward high buy-ins. I find that in the smaller buy-ins, I don’t do as well. The higher the buy-in, the more pressure and the better I play. I guess my own particular strategies are more suited to high-buy-in events against better players. So, for me, I’d rather play fewer events that are higher buy-in. What do you think it is about your style that matches up so well with those events? I think it’s probably rooted in logical ability. Basically, the higher the buy-in, the deeper the chip stacks, right? So, there’s more opportunity for telling stories with your bets and raises, and there’s more opportunity for tricking and trapping your opponents. In smaller buy-ins, you have to play more ABC optimally and just exploit the mistakes your opponents are making. At the higher levels, you’re not really waiting for your opponents to make errors – you’re more trying to trick and trap them. So it’s a little bit more of a mind game. I guess I don’t have the patience to play the ABC right way that I should in the smaller buy-ins, and then in the bigger buy-ins, tricking other thinking opponents is enough of a challenge that I give it my A-plus effort every time. But you cut your teeth playing sit-n-go’s, right? Well, I started off playing on the internet for free when I was in college, and then when I turned 21, I started playing live – that was when I was in law school in Miami. The first casino I played at was the Seminole Hard Rock down there, which had sit-n-go’s. I’d play on the weekends, and that’s how I built up my first bankroll. Why did sit-n-go’s work for you? They really had a definable, optimal strategy. Once you figure them out, there are only so many dynamics that can come up in one 10-person, set-blind-structure, $150-buy-in game. There’s just not that many ways it can go down. It took me a couple weeks to figure it out, but once I did, it was a formula that I could apply to that situation. And it was pretty consistent at making money. For beginners who want to follow in your footsteps, what sit-n-go advice do you have for them? I’m really big into reading the books and preparing for poker the same way you would for any money-making opportunity. People don’t just jump into investment banking without any schooling about it. I read like 30 books in a couple months before I started. Also, you need to be a lot more patient than people think you need to be. People come in to play, and they try to take advantage of the low blind levels to play hands that are a little more speculative. But really, the chips are worth next to nothing when the table is still 9- or 10-handed. For instance, many people may find that they double up or even triple up early on in a match, but then don’t even make the top three. Because that early on, those chips just aren’t worth anything. Therefore risking chips to accumulate those early chips isn’t worth it. It’s profitable to play much, much tighter than you think in the early stages. Once your career got moving, was there a moment when things really came together for you? I think it was when I came in 7th in the $25,000 buy-in WPT main event back in 2006. It was the first time I’d taken a shot on the pro circuit, and it worked out. I won a quarter-million dollars, and that pretty much launched my career. It gave me the confidence to continue playing the circuit. Then later that year I won another 400-some thousand in various events. So 2006 was really the big year for me. Can you describe the processes running in your mind when you’re at a game like that and trying to get a read on your opponents? Getting a read all boils down to two categories – are they comfortable or uncomfortable? Because, if they have a good hand and they’re an experienced player, that’s a situation where they’re going to be super-comfortable. Good players have had aces a million times, so their hands aren’t trembling at aces anymore – it’s just something that makes them feel confident. Whereas even a good player can get nervous when they’re in on a big bluff, because that’s a situation that’s less in their control. On the flip side, inexperienced players will be a lot more uncomfortable with good hands because they’re not used to getting aces, kings, queens. The adrenaline’s been released. And since beginners tend to think poker is a lot more about bluffing, they can actually look pretty comfortable holding nothing. Good players, though, know how easy it is to get caught bluffing. So, if you can put your opponent into the comfortable/uncomfortable category, and then determine whether or not they’re an experienced player, it can really help you decide whether they have a hand. Is this the kind of stuff you get into during your poker boot camps? Yeah. I break down tournament strategy into a logical formula and give people guidelines to follow. Rather than vague principles, I give them specific strategies to follow. Mostly, I try to simplify the extremely complex game of tournament poker. Some of the things they can expect to learn are how to use “M” in hand selection; I cover some advanced reading techniques; I cover some game theory and poker stuff, as well.
